“Peter Parkher” wraps up the grand prize in Anti-corruption songwriting competition

July 11, 2006

from The British Council’s UK LINK - JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2006

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

-Stan Lee, creator of “Spiderman”

Lemuel “Peter Parkher” Samblero rapped his way to victory with a hard-hitting entry entitled “Mahiya Naman Kayo” which he himself interpreted during the grand final of the Anti-Corruption Songwriting Competition.

Arranged by Noel Macanaya, more popularly known as DJ M.O.D., “Mahiya Naman Kayo” was the clear favourite of the audience, with its explicit lyrics and simple melody line, which can easily be sung by the ordinary man-on-the-street. Believing in the famours lines from Stan Lee’s comic character –“With great power comes great responsibility,” Samblero boldly opted to use children as backing vocals on the song, Bu the time the chorus was being sung, people in the audience which packed the AFP Theatre were on their feet and waving their hands as they boisterously sang along.

Jungee Marcelo hiphopped his way to second place with “Walang Kurap,” while Christine Bendebel won third prize for “Crossroads,” which was interpreted by Pearlsha Abubakar.

Copies of the CD compiling all 10 final entries are being distributed by the Office of the Ombudsman for free.
